Theme:We Are Survivors Who Can Bear Witness Through Memory
Imagine a world vastly different from our own—one not dominated by humans. In this world, dinosaurs never went extinct; instead, they survived for eons, eventually developing thoughts and language. To them, humans are simply "a certain type of creature" .
If the history of Earth were compressed into a single day, single-celled organisms would appear at 4:00 AM. By 8:30 PM, multicellular life would begin to flourish. Dinosaurs would rule the Earth from approximately 10:46 PM to 11:39 PM, while humans would only make their debut as midnight approaches.
Yet, for humanity, this brief moment has felt long enough—so long that we can only imagine the lives of our ancestors through songs, artifacts, and ancient scrolls. They are our 'dead friends'; we are the survivors who carry their memory.
Swiss playwright Ariane Koch has taken an even bolder step by attempting to 'remember' the dinosaurs. In her play Dead Friends (Dinosaur Monologues), she has dinosaurs sing ancient folk songs, recount their own histories, and voice their sighs over time and life... they even leave behind historical records for the birch trees that would later dominate the planet.
What a strange yet familiar experience it is to remember 'dinosaurs'. Ariane Koch makes us grow crests, shells, and claws, yet through this time- travel journey, we experience loneliness, nothingness, anger, and fear more vividly than ever before.
On Wednesday, April 29th, Ariane Koch, along with theater creator Selena Lu and Dead Friends translator Wang Yukuan, will visit the Department of Culture and Education of the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Shanghai. Starting from this play, they will discuss how we perceive life, death, and the evolution of civilization, and how we—as survivors in a sense—approach remembrance and writing.
This event is supported by Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia Shanghai, Goethe-Institut Beijing, and the Department of Culture and Education of the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Shanghai.

Selena Lu is Independent theatre maker, director and teacher, co-founder of _ao_ao_ing ensemble, founder of Birdie Theatre Education Network.
Trained with socio-psychological imagination, Selena has always seen theatre-makingas an action or gesture: to research, to connect and to heal. Her documentary works focus on finding alternative narratives for communities “endangered by a social accident": hosting a graduation ceremony for students exiled from a bankrupt diploma mill (“The Way to Walden”, 2014-18), verbatim silenced significant others of MH370(“Quiet”, 2016), or dissecting her own family's hospice practice in an age of medical overuse (“RIP Papa”, 2021).
In 2018, Selena co-founded all-female ensemble_ao_ao_ing (老妖精) practicing“the art of being together”._ao_ao_ing is a decentralised yet tight-knit group. Together they created some extravagant works: a 100m-dragon-parade for a modernised village, an audio tour in a to-be-gentrified district, a drag show on the road, a grandauction for their local vendor's unsalable goods after lockdown in a museum next to Christie's. Their performances often intertwine with the place and people they encounter, flirt with the line between theatre and everyday life and create real happenings that cannot be replicated. Selena received education from Cambridge and East 15, and her/their works have been generously supported by the International Ibsen Awards, Goethe-Institut, Ming Contemporary Art Museum (McaM) in Shanghai, Power Station of Art, Rockbund Art Museum, Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre, Nanluoguxiang Performing Arts Festival, Helsinki Festival and more.
