本周我們學習和運氣相關的詞匯

1. luck/?l?k/

n. 運氣

常見搭配：

beginner’s luck 新手運氣

try/ test one’s luck 碰運氣

e.g. I won the game on my first try. It was probably beginner’s luck.

e.g. Many young people go to big cities to try their luck.

其他搭配：

down on one’s luck 時運不濟[常指一段時間]

down-on-one’s luck adj. 倒霉的；失意的

e.g. He lost his job and has been down on his luck ever since.

e.g. The movie tells the story of a down-on-his-luck businessman who starts over from scratch.

2. break /brek/

n.機遇；機會；好運

常見搭配：

catch a break 終于走運；終于迎來轉機

a lucky break 一個幸運的機會;好運氣

a big break 重大轉機[尤其是在演藝圈]

e.g. Some people work extremely hard but never seem to catch a break.

e.g. Getting that internship was a lucky break.

e.g. Many successful celebrities spent years waiting for their big break.

3. Murphy's Law

墨菲定律：Anything that can go wrong will go wrong. 怕什么來什么

e.g.I forgot my wallet, missed the bus, and spilled coffee on my shirt. It was Murphy’s Law.

e.g. I’m not very superstitious, but occasionally Murphy’s Law feels surprisingly accurate.

搭配：Murphy’s Law strikes again. 墨菲定律應驗

e.g. Whenever I forget an umbrella, it rains. Murphy’s Law strikes again.

4. superstition /?su?p?'st??(?)n/

n. 迷信

e.g. Some people believe breaking a mirror brings bad luck, but it’s just superstition.

e.g. People’s beliefs were full of ignorance and superstition.

補充：ignorance n. 無知

adj. superstitious 迷信的

e.g.Some superstitious practices should be abolished as soon as possible.

補充：self-fulfilling prophecy 自我實現預言[心理按時]

superstition 更側重于相信超自然力量

e.g. In some cases, superstition functions as a self-fulfilling prophecy rather than a supernatural force.
