劉禹錫的《秋詞》共有兩首，這是其中的第一首。在眾多寫秋的詩作中，這首《秋詞》尤為獨特，也很出名，因為它所表達的情感和其他詩作大不一樣。

“自古逢秋悲寂寥，我言秋日勝春朝。”

詩的開篇以議論下筆，意思是：自古以來，文人墨客都悲嘆秋天蕭條冷清，“我”卻認為秋天遠勝過春天。

雖然如此，但劉禹錫卻一改傳統，接著用一句“我言秋日勝春朝”寫出了新意。他用“秋日勝春朝”這一對比，高度贊美了秋天。秋天遠勝過繁花似錦的春天，一下子把秋天的地位抬高，把它定格在高調之中。

在寂寥的秋天里，劉禹錫能寫出如此樂觀的詩句，可以見得，他的心情不錯，而且心里充滿了自信。然而，這份自信卻染上了他人生很多不幸的色彩，但他最終都以開闊的胸襟化解了這些不幸。所以，在他看來，秋天并非寂寥，而是比春天更勝一籌。

那么，劉禹錫為什么說：“秋日勝春朝”呢？我們讀讀后兩句便知道。

“晴空一鶴排云上，便引詩情到碧霄”；秋日，天高氣爽，晴空如洗。一只鶴推開云層，直飛云霄，也激發了“我”的詩情，飛向萬里晴空。

公元805年，唐順宗李誦當皇帝，王叔文得到了重用。隨后，王叔文對朝政進行了一系列改革，史稱“永貞革新”。劉禹錫參是此次改革中的重要成員之一。
