大同應該有三個文化高地,一個是云岡,一個是華嚴寺,這兩個高地——石窟藝術和佛教造像在中國的美術史上都是一流的、頂尖的水準,是在最高水準上的藝術體現。第三個文化高地就在當代,如果有了忻東旺美術館——這一道新的風景線就會成為大同的一個當代的文化高地。
東旺是一個繪畫天才,他在油畫技藝上所達到的高度,是油畫傳入中國一百多年來的一個高峰。大同如果能夠有這樣的眼光,能夠站在這個高度上去認識忻東旺的藝術,是大同這座聞名古都的幸事。
任何一個國家、一個地區、一個民族、一個時代的文化都是群體創造的,但文化的高度卻是由個體創造的,也是由個體呈現的。個體的高度,就是一個國家、一個地區、一個民族、一個時代的高度。沒有李白、杜甫,就沒有唐詩的高度;沒有蘇東坡,也沒有宋詞的高度;沒有紅樓夢,明清的小說在世界上的影響力就無從談起。
所以,文化的高度都是由個體創造。東旺能夠留在大同,就意味著大同在當代藝術中有了一個新的高度。
正是在這個意義上,忻東旺美術館的開館必將成為大同這座城市一個新的亮點,成為大同這座歷史名城一個新的文化地標。

Datong should have three cultural highlands. The first is the Yungang Grottoes, and the second is the Huayan Temple. In the history of Chinese Fine art, these two highlands—grotto art and Buddhist sculpture—represent a first-class, supreme standard, and the pinnacle of artistic creation. The third cultural highland belongs to the present. With the establishment of the Xin Dongwang Art Museum, this new cultural landscape will become a contemporary cultural highland for Datong.
Xin Dongwang was a gifted painting prodigy. The pinnacle he attained in oil painting techniques marks one of the greatest heights in the more than a century since oil painting was introduced into China. It would be a great blessing for the ancient historic city of Datong if it could possess the insight to appreciate Xin Dongwang’s art from such an elevated perspective.
While the culture of any nation, region, ethnic group or era is forged collectively by the masses, its artistic zenith is defined and embodied by outstanding individuals. The stature of singular masters sets the cultural benchmark of their nation, region, people and age. Without Li Bai and Du Fu, Tang poetry could never have reached its illustrious peak; without Su Dongpo, Song ci would lack its supreme accomplishment; absent A Dream of Red Mansions, the novels of the Ming and Qing dynasties could hardly claim remarkable global influence.
Thus, the heights of culture are always achieved by individuals. That Dongwang’s art remains in Datong means the city has gained a new height in contemporary art.
It is in this sense that the opening of the Xin Dongwang Art Museum will become a new highlight—a new cultural landmark—for the city.
