The first episode was released in December 2025, but the show's explosive popularity did not fully ignite until late April 2026, when its sixth episode — a standalone segment titled Pear Garden Twin Stars — went viral almost overnight.

In their past lives, the two characters were childhood companions and lovers. Set against the backdrop of the Nanjing Massacre, the historical storyline follows these two protagonists, who are traditional Chinese opera performers, as they are forced by Japanese invaders to perform in a propaganda play. Feigning obedience, they secretly resist, ultimately choosing to poison themselves and their captors, dying together onstage.

The chemistry between the two leads has drawn particular praise. Their subtle, wordless exchanges have been described by viewers as far more impactful than the forced romantic scenes that dominate mainstream dramas.

Critical response has been no less enthusiastic. Yu Zheng, one of China's most prominent screenwriters and producers, posted on social media that he was moved to tears by the series, praising its "concept, details, narrative, pacing, and performances — every aspect is flawless". He added: "This kind of work makes me feel there is still hope for film and television."
