Shortly after the backlash erupted, Lu edited her social media post, replacing the live photo with an officially released still from the film. She issued a public apology on Sunday. "I have seen all the criticism," Lu wrote. "I sincerely apologize to the film Dear You and to everyone. My actions indeed hurt the hard work of the filmmakers and set a bad example for those who support me. Regardless of my original intention, what I did was wrong." "I truly hope that this warm and heartfelt movie will reach more audiences," she added.
Wan Yong, a law professor at Renmin University of China, said live photos lasting two to three seconds also violate Article 31 of China's Film Industry Promotion Law, which bans unauthorized recording. "Even static photos, if they capture core scenes or key plot points and are shared publicly, may constitute copyright infringement when they substantially substitute the original film content," Wan added.

Huang Chuxin, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, argued that the answer is not to ban sharing outright. Instead, Huang called for clearer legal boundaries, better public guidance on cinema etiquette, and official alternative materials — such as stills or clips — to satisfy viewers' social sharing needs without harming the film industry.

The film's director Lan Hongchun took to social media on Saturday night to express his gratitude to all who have supported the movie, saying their appreciation has allowed "this unadorned, sincere story to be seen".
