很多同學知道 genuine 有「真誠」之義，除此之外，它還可以表示 exactly what it appears to be「真正的，名副其實的」，類似 real。既可以指某物保真，比如，「真皮」的英文就是 genuine leather；也可以指某種情況是「真的」，某人的身份是「真的」等。

所以 genuinely 可以在很多時候替換 really。而 really 正是我們寫作中經常用到的詞匯。下面我們來讀一讀 2022 年 6 月四級閱讀中的一句話，其中 genuinely engage with the course material 是指「真正參與到課程學習中」。

fundamentally 非常

fundamentally = very, extremely

fundamentally

對應的形容詞是 fundamental，表示 relating to the most basic and important parts of something「重大的，根本的」，比如 the fundamental cause of the problem 是指「問題的根本原因」。所以 fundamentally 用來表示「根本上」。

如果一件事從根本上是錯的，說明什么？說明徹底錯了。所以這個副詞還可以表示「非常地，完全地」，我們可以用它來替換用了八百年的 very, completely, extremely 等程度副詞。因此，句中 fundamentally different 是指「截然不同」。來看《經濟學人》的一個例句。

A few schools are even fundamentally rethinking their recruitment policies to reflect the evolving character of modern management.

assume the obligation of ... 承擔責任

assume the obligation of sth= take responsibility for sth

Whoever they appoint will assume responsibility for all financial matters.

assume

在寫作中，尤其是一些有關社會問題的作文中，我們經常要提到「承擔責任」「解決問題」等套話。如果你不想再用 take responsibility 來表示「承擔責任」，那不妨換上 assume，搭配的名詞換成 obligation，變身為 assume the obligation of sth。

assume 是個非常重要的動詞，常用來表示「假設，認為」。另外它還可以表示 「承擔」責任、義務等，相當于 take, undertake。除了這些外，shoulder 也可以表示「承擔」責任。

The court assumed responsibility for the girl's welfare.

法庭承擔了保障這個女孩福利的責任。

generate 產生，創造

generate = create

On the one hand, many see value in diversity, which can contribute a variety of perspectives, encourage new ideas, and generate innovative solutions.

譯文：一方面，許多人見識到多樣性的價值，比如，多樣性可以貢獻各種觀點，鼓勵新想法，并產生創新型解決方案。

generate

這是一個英文很常用，但鮮少在大家作文中出現的動詞。generate 最常用來表示 to produce or create sth 「產生；引起；創造」，它可以跟收益、新創意等很多名詞搭配，比如，generate revenue「創造收益」， generate new ideas「帶來新創意」。前不久，《經濟學人》寫過一篇有關阿爾諾的文章，他是著名奢侈品品牌路易威登集團的總裁兼 CEO。

Mr Solca estimates it generates €20bn in sales (about a third of LVMH’s revenues in 2021), with operating margins close to 50%.

索爾卡估計其銷售額為 200 億歐元，約占 LVMH 集團 2021 年收入的三分之一， 營業利潤率更是接近 50%。

tactic 方法，策略

tactic = method, approach

「方法」除了 method 還可以怎么說呢？approach 是一個很好的選擇。除此之外，我們還可以用另一個名詞。tactic 是指 the particular method you use to achieve sth「策略，招數」，所以在有些時候我們可以拿它來替換 method 和 approach。不過跟這倆不同的是，tactic 還常用來表示一種宏觀的行動方針，簡單來說，tactic 更費腦子。比如，switch tactics「改變策略」。下面我們再來看 2021 年 12 月六級聽力中的這句話。
